Healthy Eating

Food nourishes our bodies and gives us the energy to get through each day. Healthy eating is basic to healthy living and is a key element in healthy human development, from the prenatal and early childhood years to healthy aging. Healthy eating is equally important in reducing the risk of many chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and some types of cancer.

Healthy Eating Basics
Eating healthy includes a variety of great tasting foods from each of the four food groups from Eating Well With Canada's Food Guide.

Focus on Vegetables and Fruit
Eating a wide variety of vegetables and fruit has been shown in over 4,500 studies to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Focus on Sodium
Canadians consume more than twice the amount of sodium we need each day, putting us at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. B.C. residents have among the highest sodium intakes in the country.

Healthy Eating for Families

Everyone needs a variety of foods for a healthy mind and body. Good nutrition is even more important for children because they’re developing.

Healthy Eating for Aging

As we age, our nutrition needs change. We need fewer calories, but just as many nutrients and – in some cases – even more!
