Healthy Communities

What is a healthy community? It is a community that nurtures its members, where everyone can live safely and get involved in activities they enjoy.

A healthy community is one that is continually creating and improving those physical and social environments, and expanding those community resources which enable people to support each other in performing all the functions of life and in developing themselves to their maximum potential.

There is no “one size fits all” approach to creating a “healthy community.” Each region has different characteristics and each community has a unique history of supporting collective health and well-being.

Local governments play an important role in creating the kinds of environments that help people make healthy choices in all areas of their lives, improving quality of life, reducing demand on the healthcare system and helping Government achieve its goal of leading North America in healthy living and physical activity.
