Act Now to Reduce Sodium
There are simple and easy steps you can take to lower the sodium on your menu.
- Choose plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit—these are generally low in sodium and provide the added benefit of lowering blood pressure. The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is a well known way to treat high blood pressure. DASH recommends eating eight to ten servings of vegetables and fruit each day.
- Learn the low sodium food choices in each food group.
- Prepare foods from ‘scratch’ more often than prepared and processed foods.
- Avoid using commercially softened water for drinking or cooking.
- Make smart choices—in the grocery store, in the kitchen, at the table and in the restaurant.
