Healthy Choices in Pregnancy

Healthy Choices in Pregnancy is part of ActNow BC, and provides resources for individuals, families and communities to increase their understanding about contributing to healthy outcomes for women who are pregnant and their infants, and to enhance the ability of communities to be supportive of women during and after their pregnancies. This initiative focuses on physical activity, healthy eating, tobacco use and alcohol use.

Physical Activity and Pregnancy
It is best to try to make healthy lifestyle changes three months before trying to get pregnant – but it’s never too early, or too late. The most up-to-date advice is that physical activity is safe during pregnancy.
Tobacco Use and Pregnancy
Women report that they smoke for a variety of reasons, including: to organize social relationships, create an image, control emotions, and as a form of social support and control.

Healthy Eating and Pregnancy
You can eat more healthfully and be more active by making healthy eating and active living family priorities, listening to your body, planning ahead, and making healthy choices.
Alcohol Use and Pregnancy
Drinking alcohol is a common social activity for many women. In fact, 76 percent of the women surveyed in the Canadian Addiction Survey reported drinking in the past year.
